  • Hey CrossFit Asheville!

I know a lot of people at CFA are interested in diet, especially, lately, in the Paleo-Diet system of eating. This is a very positive development, and kudos should go to our coaches for blazing the trail there.

On this rest day, I feel like pushing you a little bit further. My suggestion is that you learn about and consider applying the principles of Dr. Barry Sears’ “Zone” diet. This is the “original” CrossFit diet — the partnership between Sears and CrossFit founder Greg Glassman goes back 15 years — and it is still the foundation of the nutritional advice offered by the official “mothership” program.

Let me make up some figures out of the air and pass them off as fact: the Paleo diet only gets you 80% of the way to healthy and performance driven eating habits. It’s “the zone” that gets you the rest of the way. What does “the zone” add? It adds a “dietary technology” to a sensible way of selecting good foods. It adds a system of determining portion sizes and ratios that are right for your body and fitness needs.

A good place to start learning about the “Zone” diet, health, and athletic performance is in the recent series of Web-Videos published by CrossFit Journal. (If you haven’t plunked down your $25 for a subscription to the journal, well, get with it!).

Barry Sears addressed the CrossFit community directly in a lecture on inflammation and health on Aug. 8th, 2009. The talk has been published, in four parts, on the CrossFit Journal. Samples of those videos have been published on the CrossFit main site in the last couple of weeks.

The basic message is that our American diet causes hidden, painless inflammation that leads ultimately to an untimely death for millions of people. Oh and did I mention that they are a lot fatter, slower, and weaker than they need to be?

    Check out these videos!

    Anyway, here’s to your health!

I just wanted to say that I thought James looked really cute in this picture. I love the way kids can crash anywhere and in just about any position. It seems a little trivial after Matt’s blog.

  • not at all J-money. James does look cute there. Love the little kids!
