CrossFit Asheville will be Closed for our Saturday classes tomorrow due to our participation in the Heartstrings Fundraiser at the Asheville Mall.  Feel free to come and sign up on spot to get in on a work-out.

Moe’s Southwest Grill Supports Project Access
As part of HeartStrings 2010, Moe’s Southwest Grill in Biltmore Village will be donating 10% of all sales on Saturday, February 6 to Project Access. After doing your WOD, come enjoy delicious, healthy burritos, tacos, and quesadillas with your family and friends and help Project Access in the process. Plan your meal in advance with Moe’s menu. Moe’s Southwest Grill is open Saturday from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm and is located near the railroad tracks in Biltmore Village (yes, you can get there even with the bridge construction).

AMRAP in 10 minutes of:

25 double unders or 75 singles

10 burpees

You can sub tuck jumps for double unders if you are without a rope!

    First WOD: AMRAP in 10:00 of 10 KB swings (35 lb) and 10 wallballs (12 lb) and 10 wallballs (12 lb ball to 10-12′ target). Unsure of my rounds. KB swings all unbroken. Wallballs were a suckfest in the rain. Impossible to catch or throw a sloppy, muddy ball.

    Second WOD: 60 lb sandbag carry uphill (120m), 10 sandbag cleans, sandbag carry downhill, 20 deadlifts @ 135 lbs. Deads were great. Sandbag cleans were hard after the hill. Lots of girls could not clean the bag, and a bunch struggled with deads. I was dreading this WOD, and it went really well. Time was 4:21. Some times under 4:00, but a lot in the 7:00-9:30 range. We were being hit with freezing rain/sleet while we did this one.

    Third WOD is a 7K trail run at 4:30 pm. The groups that already went
    came in bleeding and soaking wet. Two thigh high creek crossings, as if 7K of mud wasn’t enough. I am very glad I bought the Inov8 trail shoes because I am wearing them for every WOD.

    They said they may post KB/wallball results soon.

    Todays WOD done in drive way 28.2 degrees blowing snow!!! 75 singles and burpees; 3 burpees shy of 4 complete rounds (3rnds+75 singles+7 burpees)!

    Thank you to everyone who made Heartstrings 2010 a success today. I can’t thank the CFA community enough for your enthusiastic participation, fundraising, volunteerism, and good spirit.

    And it is true, Shanna, that it’s not every day that you see a ferret in the Mall. But I’ll bet you see ferrets in the mall more times than you see Crossfitters in the Mall. We certainly drew a lot of attention all day long. Fitness Evolved meets Mall Devolved.

    Please be aware that at 10 a.m. this morning, a member of the Asheville Police Academy did the Heartstrings workout with a broken arm. Specifically, burpees with ONE ARM. ONE FLIPPING ARM. Shanna and Corey are plotting our demise as I type this.

    7K trail run went much better than expected. One of the coolest things I’ve done in CrossFit. Knee deep mud and thigh high creek crossings in 30 degrees. Yeah, the trail shoes were awesome, heh. People were busting left and right, a few face first into the creek. I definitely beat a few girls who beat me in that wallball suckfest. No rankings yet. Fourth WOD is at noon today. On paper, it looks like something I should crush…but, haha, I thought the wallball WOD would be easy.

    Miriam, the WOD today has 40 burpees, and I will be doing them with BOTH FLIPPIN’ ARMS!

    Was very proud yesterday to be involved with crossfit. All of my many crossfit friends, my coaches, last but not least Miriam , Shonnie and the folks at BCMS. You really got the message out there. Great effort everyone.

    Tom, that was such a nice post, thank you. I’ve only been involved in CFA since November–a relatively unfit and older newbie with no CF cred–yet the response of this group to this fundraiser was *unbelievable*. The participation and turnout was beyond what I ever imagined. We even had special appearances by Matt B. post surgery and Dr. Brian Cohen (who was pulling parent duty while Tam was slogging thru mud). Some CF-ers stayed THE WHOLE DAY to watch, help out, cheer on teams. The teams who had participated in previous years when it was a Spinning event were totally enthusiastic and said they’d go back and bring back bigger teams next year. We got groups like the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Dept. to try this out for the first time, and they said next year they are coming back in full force. The President of BCMS, Will Wharton, who is a cardiologist, said he’d bring his entire Cardiac Path lab next year (30 people). UNCA folks talked about bringing a bigger posse next year. All day long, I heard folks say, “Jeez, I thought I was physically fit, but… (visualize crushed look on face).” Heh heh heh.

    Just as T-Bone has never experienced a 7k run in thigh-deep creek crossings, I’ve never experienced a community of fit, fun, and philanthropic people such as this. Crossfit brings us new challenges and opportunities every day, doesn’t it. Makes life pretty darned worthwhile, I’d say.

    OK, back to the funny posts. Don’t want to tarnish my reputation.

    I am so proud of CFA for taking responsibility for the health of our neighbors. It was inspiring to see how much money we raised for the uninsured. What an honor to participate!

    M3, that would be Sheri. Thank you for taking that impromptu shot as I plan to use it to blackmail Corey in some tremendous way at a future date when he *thinks* he’s going to invite Fran over for a visit of pure torture, or when he has the *audacity* to lecture us about Paleo and then GO DRINK BEER. (“It’s Paleo if you can slice the beer.” Really, Corey? I’m looking that up in Cordain’s book and I’m just not finding that page…) Bwhahaha.

    Yesterday was great fun, and it was an honor to be a part of it. However, crossfit is the only way I would EVER be caught lying on the floor in the Asheville Mall. As a pharmacist, I see the benefits of project access on a daily basis and I was happy to be able to participate in this great event. Thanks to everyone involved!!!

    Miriam, I’m so glad that Heartstrings was a grand success! Hannah was very excited to donate her $2, and Brian is glad to officially be a member of the cult with his CFA shirt. I can’t wait to see pics of everyone rockin’ it out at the mall.

    Final WOD: 10 reps ground to overhead @ 75 lbs (I did C&Js), 20 situps, 600m run, 10 KB swings @ 35 lbs, 20 burpees, 600m run, 10 C&Js @ 75 lbs, 20 situps, 600m run, 10 KB swings @ 35 lbs, 20 burpees, 600m run. So, four runs with the hill from hell. It made the CFA hill look like a party. The clean and jerks, situps, burpees, and KB swings were completed in a freaking WET SAND PIT. It was the second hardest WOD I’ve ever done, after the insane WOD that Katie Nery programmed at her house when I had first started CF…hers was only more difficult because I was so out of shape then. This WOD made the 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 thruster/burpee WOD seem easy…EASY, people, haha. I finished this in 25:35. And, yes, I used both flippin’ arms for my burpees.

    They were running THREE HOURS BEHIND, so we left well before the awards ceremony. So, I don’t know where I ranked yet, but I am thinking I was middle of the pack overall. I do know that my 7k trail run was my BEST WOD where I had the HIGHEST ranking. I finished 11th, therefore, I am pretty sure pigs can now fly. I have been saying for a month that the trail run would be my weakest event, bwahahaha.

    And, I must give a shout out to my girl, Lauren, who came all the way to Georgia just to support me…and do homework :) . We had a great time. Next year, we need to make sure that Heartstrings is on a different weekend so that CFA can go to the Garage Games and crush it.

    I love CrossFit. Have I said that once, or twice…?

    Congratulations! That WOD sounds absolutely gut wrenching, and in a wet sand pit? Sand? That’s insane. You are one strong woman. Did not mean to take away from the Garage Games with HeartStrings. We’d booked the mall a while back. Let us know when they are next year and we’ll see if we can work around it for sure. T-you show us your pics and we’ll show us ours!! Welcome home.

    Thanks, woman! Indeed, as bad as doing burpees in a mall is…burpees in freezing wet sand…really? Hahaha. I don’t want Shanna to get any ideas. They are gearing up for a huge event next year based on the turnout this weekend, so I’m sure they will announce the 2011 date ASAP. They were already letting people pre-register.

    They had a professional photographer and videographer the whole weekend, so hopefully, there will be sweet pics and video.

    Lauren said the entire weekend that she didn’t recognize me because I was working out all bundled up and not in “underwear and knee socks” as an unnamed CF coach once called my usual outfits. I did make her proud by ripping off both of my shirts after the last set of burpees and completing the final 600m run in my sports bra. So, I will forever be known as the crazy girl with the neon green Chucks and kickass double unders who was the only competitor to do a WOD without a shirt on. I gotta maintain the rep, haha.

    I placed 17 out of 29 in the final rankings. The 7k trail run was indeed my highest finish…11th. And, the deadlift WOD was my second highest finish. Bwahahaha. So, I am ONCE AGAIN eating my words. I seriously hate when that happens. Thank you, thank you to my family at CrossFit Asheville!
