100214 Valentine’s Day “What’d you get your sweetie?”

Diabetes?

Osteoporosis?

Heart disease?

Ulcerative colitis?

For over 87 years Russell Stover has been helping Americans increase the risk of chronic disease in loved ones.  Thanks Russell.

Why is it that a staple of what you get someone for Valentine’s Day is candy?  Sugar is the most potent food source for producing sympathetic activity in our nervous system.  Chronic sympathetic activity leads to chronic diseases.  A stressful physiology increases insulin resistance leading to diabetes.  Stress physiology increases blood clotting which leads to heart disease; it decreases bone producing cells that leads to osteoporosis; it also decreases production of digestive enzymes leading to ulcerative colitis.

“Here sweetie, nothing says ‘I Love You’ like a little chronic disease”.

This year, for your loved one, tell them you’ll be around.  Make a renewed effort in YOUR health for them.  THAT’S what you give someone.  Your health, vitality, and generally good nature.  Make a small step to improve your nutrition.  Work a little more consistently at your physical prowess.  Decide to improve your mind and mental capacity by learning something new or practicing some meditation.

Don’t fall victim to the “Because I love you, I’ll kill you slowly” attitude.  Love is growing together.  Improve yourself and that motivates your loved ones to improve with you.

Corey, don’t beat around the bush, just tell us how you feel. Classic.

  • Russell

Hell yeah, take no prisoners, Corey! :)

  • Dale

I see the candy gift more as a favor. That way your spouse doesn’t have to worry about out living you. ;)

  • M3

…and I thought I was the worst valentine’s day scrooge this year ;)

  • miriam

OK, I get the candy, Corey. But where are my f***ing flowers? Is a little bouquet of flowers gonna kill me?

I am so kidding. I hate Corporate Valentine’s Day, if hadn’t made that clear on Facebook. In fact, my husband and I take pride in forgetting our wedding anniversary every year. I think it’s 25 years, but not sure. Whatever, it’s been a long time through lots of trials and tribuations. Now, that’s love. Or endurance. Well, it’s something.

  • M3

lol…depends on if the flowers are GMO

…often maturity and wisdom are a disguise for just being tired… ;)

Thanks Corey, this helps me justify my, “I love you so much, I’m not getting you anything” attitude.

  • That must be why I didn’t get my wife any VD gift this year!

  • corey

Miriam, when shanna forgot my birthday I knew she was the one for me.

Also, I love that valentines day and venereal disease have the same abbreviation.

  • Mr K

I just got through prepping my Valentines Day dinner… Lobster, avocado and hearts of palm salad, velvety beet soup, individual beef wellingtons with braised asparagus, and for dessert, chocolate expresso mousse. Then I read Corey’s post and guess I killing my family. Oh well, at least we will enjoy our poison.

  • corey

Mr K, examine the calorie and nutrient load of your entire meal (mousse incl) and it doesn’t compare to a box of chocolates. Great job, your family should be very proud and thankful.

  • miriam

Mr. K. I would like to commit suicide and come over to your house for dinner.

Corey, the public health implications of VD Day are not lost on me.

Yes Matt, according to Corey, you got your wife the very romantic gift of YOUR health and well-being and Yael should be swooning over that. Hmmm…I need to think about a little more. Something’s just not quite right. Is this some sort of Crossfit conspiracy to buy your loved one another month of you getting to do CFA WODs?

M3, I wasn’t going to eat the flowers, so it’s ok if they are GMO!

BTW, I told my husband it was Valentine’s Day just now and he said, “It is NOT.” There you go.

  • Karl,

I’ll be over for dinner! I’m salivating already! Enjoy it and as Corey implied above…everything in moderation.

  • J$

Ok one question….does this mean you didn’t get Shanna anything for Valentine’s Day? Ok sugar does not equate to love and is not a nice thing to give somebody, I get it. But I’m with Miriam…flowers are nice. I think there may even be some research that say enjoying flowers is beneficial to yor health. There must be some reason they have lasted so long. Tell me you at least got the little lady some flowers?

  • Sorry to disappoint J$, but we don’t exactly give holiday gifts. I didn’t get him anything either. I hope you enjoyed your birthday/valentine’s combo weekend!

  • miriam

Ah J$, Corey doing 100 burpees in a row for Shanna? That’s romance, my friend. Flowers? Feh. They die in a few days. Fuggetaboutit.

I love this – as a jeweler trying to make a living in a down economy i was pondering this last week myself
I came up with a saying – nothing says love like saturated fat! ha – i was working on a mantra trying to manifest some sales-people buy something handmade and local instead of the unhealthy stuff made somewhere else or all the flowers people get shipped here from other countries!

  • I found your blog on MSN and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my favorites. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.
