This is a late response to yesterday’s post about motivation vs. inspiration. Personally, I have discovered this to be so very true – that you really cannot motivate someone else; you can only inspire that person. My husband drank the kool-aid, concerning CrossFit of course, while he was in the military serving overseas. I thought it was a phase – something he did to pass the time during his deployment, but alas no. He continued to do CrossFit when he returned the states. He was very enthusiastic and well-intentioned in his efforts to recruit me to CrossFit. He told me how great I’d feel, how strong I would become . . . and it irritated me. The stubborn side of me dug my heels in (I’m not proud of this) and completely resisted having someone tell me what I should do. No way was I going to someone’s garage to throw weights around with sweaty men (I don’t think it occurred to me that there were women there too)). This went on for two years – my husband singing the praises of Crossfit while I ignored him and even, regrettably, made fun of his “addiction”.
But what I couldn’t ignore was one afternoon when he took his shirt off and I had this teenage-crush reaction; this moment of blushing clarity that my man looked good – really good! (sorry hon, I know this will embarrass you). And I couldn’t deny that he had a ridiculous amount of energy, which was annoying because I felt tired more than I cared to admit. So that was it. End of story, really. Bill never had to say anything to me. It didn’t matter what he said. All he had to do was continue to work hard and I was inspired by the changes in him. I was inspired by his strength, his energy, his commitment. I knew it worked, because I had witnessed the changes in him, and I wanted it for myself. So in the end, my husband offered the inspiration, the motivation came from within, and CFA has provided the means (great coaches, community) in my experience with CrossFit.
