    Cleveland DOES Rock!!!

Cleveland Clinic has passed ban on all sugar-sweetened beverages & foods in vending machines & the cafeteria. What can we do to get AVL on board with this?? Not only @ Mission, but in our schools too!

“The Clinic offers fresh vegetables from a farmers market.”
If they can manage this in Ohio with a far shorter growing season there should be no reason AVL cannot organize the same!

    Thoughts???

I wrote an article about healthy vending machines in the area for the Citizen-Times a couple of years ago. I learned that Asheville Cardiology Associates had replaced their vending machine snacks with “healthy” ones, but several employees rebelled, so they put the old ones back in…can you say “irony”?

  • AF- It seems they should consider what they are paying for the health care plans of the employees that rebel.

Here’s the story. AC-T link’s broken. Business is still going.

Putting healthier snacks in vending machines
    By Anne Fitten Glenn
    CITIZEN-TIMES CORRESPONDENT

ASHEVILLE – Natural Nosh wants you to have the option of healthier, all-natural snacks when you’re temped to hit the office vending machines.

Natural Nosh currently owns 10 vending machines scattered around town that they keep stocked with all-natural snack foods. They’re hoping to add more.

“It’s still snack food, but it comes from real food sources, and it doesn’t contain dyes, food coloring, or non-natural preservatives,” says business co-owner JayneAnne Tager.

She compares the ingredient list on a bag of all-natural potato chips, containing seven ingredients, all familiar to most eaters, to a bag of Pringles-brand chips, containing 29 ingredients, many of which don’t correspond to words most eaters would describe as food.

“Four of these ingredients are dyes. Who decided we need to dye our food? It doesn’t make it taste better,” Tager said, laughing.

Tager and husband Josh Tager with friends Eddie and Arlene Cotler purchased four vending machines last April from Pat Boy, who started the business a few years ago but wanted to retire. The Tagers and Cotlers have since expanded the number of vending machines and are talking to a number of businesses about placing them in their offices.

“We send a packet of sample products to interested businesses,” Tager said. “We’ve learned that we need traffic of 80 to100 people going by the machine per day in order for the machine to be profitable.”

Natural Nosh’s owners have also learned that potential customers need to talk to their employees before they change their vending machines. Employees often are resistant to employers deciding to dispense with their favorite snacks, and upset that Natural Nosh snacks tend to be slightly more expensive (from 50 cents for fruit leather to $1 for potato chips up to $2 for Wasabi Edamame). The company recently removed a vending machine from Asheville Cardiology when employees rebelled.

Mountain Area Health Education Center replaced the vending machine in their main education building with a Natural Nosh machine a year ago.

“I was surprised by how much resistance and anger I encountered. People haven’t gotten to the point where they see the payoff in paying a little more to eat healthier,” said Meg Hinshaw, employee wellness and safety director at MAHEC.

Hinshaw also buys bulk natural snacks from Natural Nosh and puts together snack baskets. Employees can purchase a snack from the basket on the honor system. She said the system seems to work well, and she’s hoping to put snack baskets into all six of MAHEC’s facilities.

Carolina Day School offers only Natural Nosh vending machines on its campus.

“A few years ago, we were feeling so strongly that the snacks that we had that were high in fat and sugar were both unhealthy and sending the wrong message to our students,” said Claudia Sherry, lower school principal.

Sherry added that: “At first, students were upset. They were used to their favorite snacks, and all of the sudden, they disappeared. But then they found new favorites, and it became a non-issue very quickly. It was very important to us as a school and to our parents to be practicing what we were preaching.”

Other local businesses currently carrying Natural Nosh vending machines are the YWCA, Hanger Hall School for Girls, Warren Wilson College, and Aston Park Housing Authority.

Natural Nosh services, cleans and stocks the machines. Tager says she’d like Natural Nosh to become a full-time business for the four co-owners, but at the moment, the Tagers also own a classic and foreign film rights company, Jayne Anne Tager teaches yoga and the Cotlers own a catering business.

“At the moment, it’s a labor of love,” Josh Tager said.

“But our kids love counting the quarters, so it’s educational,” JayneAnne Tager added.

Another group that’s doing good work in this area is Healthy Buncombe Communities: http://www.healthybuncombe.org.

One of their initiatives included putting baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables in some hospital and doctor staff and waiting rooms.

    AWESOME, TOTALLY AWESOME!

Those are some killer increases in times for the ONRAMP group! Good job, folks! What I like is that the Day 1 times are all over the clock: anywhere from 10.5-21 minutes. Today’s times are a nice little cluster: 7.5-10 minutes. That’s some good data, showing that the class had a very wide range of fitness on day 1 but has finished today with a much more aligned level. That is incredible stuff. I saw them do their wod and they all gave it everything, and they looked great! Good job guys! I can’t wait to work out with all of you!

Great work, on-rampers. Welcome to the fold.

Just want to say thank-you to Corey and the ladies of the 6:30 class this evening for being so understanding when I had to keep excusing myself to answer work phone calls. I was SOOO glad to get a class in; it has made me feel 100% better. And Corey, aren’t you proud of me for not bursting into tears?
