While in chiropractic college I learned a great deal about human mechanics, movement efficiency, and training theory that I easily related to my training mistakes of the past. While the desire to work hard comes from the heart one cannot ignore the success from working smart. Knowledge of the body, the repair mechanisms, and proper movement patterns allow great efforts to be truly rewarded.

There are many people in our society unhappy about how they feel, how they move, or how they look. While there are many factors in life over which we have no control, we DO have control over the decisions made in our own daily lives. All of these decisions whether seemingly big or small work to shape who we are and how we perceive ourselves.

Allow yourself the opportunity to take a chance and discover your true capabilities. I am living proof that athleticism is an acquired skill. Regardless of your present or past ability I can help you work towards reaching your own goals and experiencing your own athletic potential.

Perfection of human movement is both my passion and my career. The display of control and grace under conditions of duress are what allow for both injury prevention and athletic dominance. Your fitness and life goals, whatever they may be, are achieved through the pursuit of perfection. To do this in a supportive community atmosphere, such as CrossFit Asheville, is powerful, inspiring, and successful. It is my desire to help you fulfill the mantra: Just Be Awesome.

Daniel Smith

Coach

Certification: Level 1 CrossFit Certification

Education: Graduate of UNCA, 2009, B.A. in General Music

Sports Background: HS Soccer, Intramural Soccer in college

In June 2005, I was 260 lbs. and in the worst shape of my life. I made a decision to get in the best shape any member of my family has ever been in. I would go up and down and have my struggles with strength and weight loss just like everyone else. In February 2009 I attended my first CrossFit class and knew I had found something that could push me through the wall I had hit multiple times before.

I got into coaching because I sensed that this could help everyone who was willing to put in the work. I started learning the ways of coaching since September 2009 and have learned so much. I love helping people reach PRs and taking two minutes off of WOD times. This has changed my life for the better and it can change yours as well.

My “CrossFit heroes” aren’t people with a 600+ lb. deadlift, a 700+ lb. back squat, or a 1:30 “Fran” time. If you show up and give 100%, YOU are my CrossFit Hero!

I am a self professed music and sports nerd.

Rick Miller

Coach

Certifications: CrossFit Level I
Sports background: soccer, football, volleyball; Firefighter Combat Challenge competitor, 2007 – present
Military experience: U.S. Navy, 1998 – 2002, Aircraft Fire/Rescue
Firefighter/EMT, 2006 – present

Growing up I spent a lot of time playing one sport or another from recreational to competitive, even during my service in the Navy, and considered myself in great shape. At the fire department I compete in the Firefighter Combat Challenge and it is one of the most demanding things I have ever been a part of.

When I started CrossFit, I found a new kind of training to help me push through to the next level of competition. During the 2009 season, I used CrossFit training to secure a spot in the Finals of the Firefighter Combat Challenge and finished the year 53rd in the world.

Now, my job requires me to be ready at all times just as life does and there is nothing better to prepare me for the unknowable than CrossFit both physically and mentally. With CrossFit Asheville I have found a family that inspires me to continually improve myself through the hard work, dedication and positive attitudes of every member. The community atmosphere is exciting and will push the limits of what you thought was possible. I invite you to challenge yourself to realize what you’re capable of.

Amber Beane

Coach

CrossFit Level 1 Certified Coach 2011

CrossFitter since summer 2010,HS Basketball and Tennis

Education:UNCG- Public Health (epidemiology)

I have always played sports and grew up with a coach for a dad and a taste for competition. I played tennis and basketball competitively throughout middle and high school and decided to take a break upon graduation… a very long break. Eight years later I found myself really out of shape and unhappy about how I was feeling and looking. I tried to pick up tennis again but wasn’t satisfied, so I settled for distance running. After a series of aches and pains and the birth of my daughter, I met some inspirational mothers who really made me think twice about fitness, competition, community, and what my little body was capable of. If they could do pull-ups and thrusters, then surely so could I …

Fast forward 1 year and I was hooked. Pull ups and thrusters, check. But here is the cool thing- you can always improve and get stronger- that’s what keeps me coming back for more. The strength I have gained permeates every aspect of my life. I walk a little taller knowing what I have accomplished and what I have yet to conquer.

Coaching came easy once I realized the amazing potential we each have inside, and how reaching for it can transform your life. Watching our athletes transform their lives, one step at a time, is truly an honor. What are you capable of?

Sean Clickner

Coach

Certifications:CrossFit Level 1 Certification, USAW Olympic Weightlifting

EMT – Paramedic, EMT – Tactical

I have always enjoyed lifting heavy objects and setting them back down. As a teen I was introduced to a barbell and we spent all of our time together. Sadly the love faded, time passed, and unhealthy habits formed. Later in life I was reintroduced to a barbell in the form of CrossFit. Two years later, I am fortunate enough to be part of a community that shares the same love as me. I am dedicated to helping others reach their ultimate fitness goals (whatever that my be). I love to teach, and am passionate about the CrossFit methodology. I am living proof of the results, both physically and emotionally. I look forward to coaching and sweating along side every athlete that walks through the doors of CFA. 3 – 2 – 1 Go!

Mado Hesselink- Yoga

Certifications: Registered with the Yoga Alliance at the 500 hour level and E-200 level (E stands for experienced and indicates 1000 teaching hours after RYT 200.)
Education: 2001 BA University of Northern Iowa

Athletic Experience: 2 years of Karate & 2 years of Ba Gua martial arts styles.  3 x/wk at CrossFit Asheville since 2010.

Growing up as a bookworm in the jungles of Hawaii, I never imagined that a physical discipline would have such a profound impact on my life. After discovering Marial Arts in college, I found my way to yoga in the late 1990s in order to balance my body from the intensity of martial arts training. When the time constraints of motherhood required that I choose one or the other, yoga won out as my passion.

I’ve been in love with helping others discover the benefits of yoga since 2005. My classes include both mental & physical aspects of yoga in a welcoming and lighthearted atmosphere with a focus on deep breathing, therapeutic (safe) alignment, and fun.  In addition to yoga, I love moving & challenging my body through hiking, dancing, aerial arts, and crossfit.
